Cultural Kaleidoscope
Chopin: Grande polonaise brillante (Zitong Wang, Winner of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition; Junior Division) [10:00]
Ponchielli: “Dance of the Hours” from La Gioconda [8:45] (Dance-Movement)
4th and 5th Grade Dance-Movement Contest: Students and teachers should create a dance and/or movement choreography to the piece “Dance of the Hours” from La Gioconda while listening to the piece in the classroom and then make a video recording of it for submission. The winning classroom will perform their work on stage with the YSO as the orchestra plays this piece during the concert. Depending on the number and quality of entries, we could have one class perform at the first concert and another one perform at the second concert.
TBD [3:00] (Music Composition) For current or past students participating in the ArtFusion Opus project. The winning composition will be performed by the Yakima Symphony Orchestra.
Debussy, arr. Luck: Clair de lune (Moonlight) [4:30] (Poetry)
4th and 5th Grade Poetry Contests: Students should write poems on the subject of Clair de lune (Moonlight) while listening to the piece in the classroom. As many of these poems as is possible will be displayed on a video screen above the stage while the orchestra plays this piece at the concert. In addition, the 1st place winner from both 4th and 5th grade will read their poems on stage at the concert. Perhaps one at the first concert and the other at the second.
Mussorgsky: “The Great Gate of Kiev” from Pictures at an Exhibition [6:30] (Visual Art)
4th and 5th Grade Visual Art Contests: Students should draw pictures and/or paintings on the subject of The Great Gate of Kiev while listening to the piece in the classroom. As many of these drawings/paintings as is possible will be displayed on a video screen above the stage while the orchestra plays this piece at the concert.
