Cultural Education Extension Program
Cultural Education Extension Program (CEEP) and the Exhibit Intern Initiative
The Larson Gallery announces a new educational outreach program called The Cultural Education extension program - CEEP; this program is designed to enhance and augment the educational experience for students in the Yakima Valley and to provide opportunities for learning about the arts and career opportunities in art related fields. The CEEP activity is divided into three parts:
The Exhibit Intern Initiative
Guest Artist Program
Art Mentors Collaboration
The Larson Gallery is now working on launching the first of this three-part program during the 2009 - 2010 school year: The Exhibit Intern Initiative. A brief outline of this participatory activity is listed below:
- GOAL: to introduce young artists to career opportunities in the museum field
- This goal will be accomplished through the creation and implementation of an art exhibition of student work, and through the experience of exhibit installation of the Feb., 2009 ESD show.
- PROCESS: through meetings, presentations, and discussions with students prior to their exhibition. High Schools are invited to participate.
- Students will learn how a museum functions and discover the nature of what it means to be a Curator, Collections Manager, Education Director, Exhibits Design, Preparator, Development Officer, and Museum Director.
- Students will learn installation methods that meet the standards of the American Association of Museums. They will learn about the importance of developing exhibition themes, label copy, press releases and other publicity, and hosting a reception.
- Students will develop skills in being able to talk about their artwork and "interpret" other artwork.
- Students will install the February 2009 ESD show guided by Cheryl Hahn, Larson Gallery Director. This will be the first hands-on experience utilizing skills articulated above.
- Students will then: (For a Spring 2010 exhibition with a theme that they decide upon)
a. install the artwork themselves
b.write their own label copy,
c.write their own press releases,
d. put on their own
e.and write a "review" of the exhibition
